Five ideas to promote your business on a local level

For a lot of brokers, marketing locally proves to be their most cost-effective channel; the competition is less, and referrals are usually easier to come by. Even so, doing something that engages a local audience can still be a challenge, so here are some ideas that I hope will inspire you:

  1. Stand out by standing up for something that’s important to your community

Here's an example of how a broker might creatively support the WWF or show their environmentally friendly credentials by using a waterproof poster at the local swimming pool.

Another idea could be to fundraise for a national charity using your referral programme. If your target market is local, then you might decide to support a local charity or school.

  2. Run regular, fun competitions

For example, test the success of publishing a ‘charity quote contest’ on social media.

  3. Promote and participate in local community events

Every community has events going on throughout the year - such as a local school fair, local repair cafes, weekend farmers market or the Guy Fawkes parade. By helping to advertise these you're not just helping your customers to become more engaged in their community, but also helping community organisers to get people to their events while marketing your business at the same time.

  4. Volunteer

The hand that gives, gathers. For example you might consider sponsoring a local litter pick or beach clean-up. If it’s cold, bring hot chocolate for everyone. This sort of thing can be fun and rewarding, but also deliver great local press coverage, plus (if you invite them) it can help you to meet local community leaders and business owners.

  5. Door-to-door

Door-to-door marketing will work hard for you, but only if you create something that sets you apart from the usual pizza and double-glazing leaflets. Here are two good examples.

Promoting your business locally helps to deliver your sales objectives without you needing to invest a lot of budget. It can raise your personal profile as well as boost your team’s morale, so should be well worth the time and effort.
