Pre-introduce yourself
A couple of weeks before the conference starts, think about the people you’d really like to get to know, and then make a plan.
Create a priority wish list of people and send them an email introducing yourself; if possible, get an introduction from a mutual friend or colleague.
If the person is presenting, tell them that you’re going to make a point of coming to his/her session. Presenters can be a bit fearful that no one will turn up to hear them speak so the fact that you’re making the effort will be appreciated.
Organise a dinner
Here’s an idea that can work very well.
Before the conference starts, book at table at a good local restaurant for around eight people. Then invite the key people from your wish list.
In the invitation, tell them that you’re bringing together a group of interesting people and you’d like them to join you. Ideally find a reason why the dinner should be of interest to them.
