A quick guide to help you to spot fake Google Reviews

  1. Examine the details of the review, and ask yourself
    • Do you know this person?
    • Is their complaint at all convincing?
    • Are they giving specific details of an actual interaction and experience, or is their review primarily made up of non-specific negative comments and scenarios?

  2. Do they use lots of exclamation marks!!!

Does the reviewer seem to be overreacting to the situation? If so then this is a classic sign.

Many fake reviews use repeated exclamation marks because they think it will reinforce their message. In reality, truthful negative reviews tend to want to justify and support their complaint by focusing on actual events and experiences that were negative, rather than describing how upset they’ll feeling at the moment of writing.

If a customer is actually upset with the service they’ve received, they typically provide thoughtful, actionable feedback in order to justify their negative score.

  3. Examine their reviews of other businesses

Often a fake reviewer, especially from a competitor, will open a new account in order to publish the review, hoping that this will disguise the source. So ask yourself:

    • Have they reviewed other businesses in your industry sector? Have they positively reviewed one of your competitors?
    • Have they reviewed other businesses? What they say, and where the companies are should give you some clues.

  4. Check the frequency of their reviews

Note that people who are paid to leave negative reviews typically submit multiple fake reviews in one day, and then immediately create a new account to avoid detection.
