Below are two simple rules and lots of tips that will help you find and work with the right copywriter.
Firstly, always use a professional
There are lots of copywriters, but a minority are true professionals.
To find your copywriter:
- Always use a recommendation
Ask people whose opinion you trust and who have had success with their own advertising efforts.
If you can’t get a recommendation that way, ask for five existing clients from the copywriter that you are considering, and get feedback from at least one or two of them.
- Get some samples
Decide what you need and get some samples.
Remember that a copywriter’s work will usually be a combination of his/her work, plus the input, and copy of the client. And the client could be the better copywriter (it happens).
Beware of those who decline to give you information or send you a "resume." This is a sure sign of an amateur.
- Choose from throughout the country
You don’t need to meet up with your copywriter, and many live far from the big cities.
Put quality and results ahead of proximity.
- Follow your instincts
Pay attention to your gut reaction. It's important to find someone that you can work with comfortably. That means having a writing style and personality that you like.
- Ask them how they will:
- grab the attention of your target audience,
- hold their interest,
- develop their desire for your product and
- ensure that your required action takes place.
Their answer should tell you a lot.
And treat them like a professional
