Are you sure you know what your job applicants are looking for?

If you know what your job seeker is most interested in, then you’ll know what to prominently feature on the job ad.

A good way to get a steer on this is by talking to your existing staff. They’ll tell you what’s good about the job.

The main primary motivators in your recruitment market:

  • Pay and a Work Life balance are the joint No.1 motivators for new staff.

With so many people working from home during lockdown, together with the cost of living now inextricably rising, it's no surprise that these two are the joint top motivators at the moment.

    Pay transparency is important

Also be aware that most applicants will want to know the salary figure upfront – which ideally needs to be clearly stated on your job advertisement.

Pay transparency can of course be controversial, with some employers embracing it and others avoiding it. But because many job applicants don’t feel confident negotiating their starting salary, many will avoid applying if they don’t know what the remuneration is likely to be, so pay transparency needs serious consideration.

Whether you opt to include the specific salary, or simply the salary bracket, providing at least some level of pay transparency will help to encourage more of the most relevant people to apply.

  • Commute time and location

Commute time, parking and location links typically come next in people's order of priorities, so to attract the right candidate you need to try to provide all the relevant information on your job ad. This includes your company location as well as what options there might be to work some of the time from home.

  • Career development opportunities are fourth on the list

While salary will always be a significant factor, career-conscious candidates are also motivated by exceptional opportunities to develop new skills and progress in their careers.

  • People and the office culture are fifth

Ideally add a prominent link to your website and social media that shows how your office is a great place to work.

  • Perks and other benefits are sixth

Many applicants rank company benefits as one of the most important factors when applying for a job.

Examples of financial benefits outside of base salary include performance bonuses, share schemes, long-term incentive plans, childcare support, private medical insurance and business pension contributions.
